After having fallen behind by 24 points by the four-minute mark in the third quarter, the 49ers and quarterback Jeff Garcia began to work on a furious comeback attempt. They scored once at the end of the third quarter, and found themselves within striking distance again early in the fourth, when Garcia faked a handoff and took off to the left on a designed quarterback run, completely fooling the defense as he dashed into the end zone untouched for the score. Garcia ran for 60 yards in this one, scoring once, while also throwing for 331 yards and three touchdowns, as San Francisco completed the comeback and beat the Giants, 39-38, in this Wild Card Round matchup on Jan. 5, 2003.
