Divisional rivals Cleveland and Pittsburgh kicked off the their respective 1989 seasons with a Week 1 showdown, and it was Browns linebacker Clay Matthews who would find paydirt first, setting the tone in what would become a defensive masterpiece. When a teammate knocked the ball free from the Pittsburgh running back close to the end zone, Matthews quickly closed on the lose ball, scooping it up and tumbling across the goal line for the score, the first of three defensive touchdowns that Cleveland would have on the day. Matthews and the Browns defense were outstanding in this one, leading the way in a 51-0 Cleveland win over Pittsburgh on Sept. 10, 1989.
