Close enough to entertain the idea of a historic field goal attempt, but yet far enough that success would be historically unlikely, the Patriots — in search of their first points — put faith in the powerful right leg of Joey Slye. Introducing New England to the scoreboards while simultaneously making his arrival to the NFL’s all-time leaderboards, Slye connects on a 63-yard kick, the team’s franchise record. Conquering what he called “unpredictable wind patterns” inside the San Francisco 49ers’ stadium, Slye was marvelous throughout, becoming just the fourth kicker over the last two decades to hit a 50-yarder and a 60-yarder in the same game. Slye finished two-of-two on field goals, and one-of-one on extra points, making himself a bright spot in the 30-13 loss on Sept. 29, 2024.
